Mickey's Christmas Carol (Disney Classic)
Walt Disney has superbly adapted his characters to those of the famous Charles Dicken's Christmas story. Great entertainment for young and old, with lots of laughs. This story keeps with the true meaning of Christmas and is a great book for the kids. It shows all about love and sharing, and teaches what Christmas is all about. Disney has been delightful in the choice of characters and settings. A MAGICAL book!

Wonderful simple projects and coloring for ages 3 to 7
This is a sweet coloring book type of activity book for pre-school and early elementary. It included a Bible themed ABC section to color, as well as numbers, colors, and basic shapes. The last part of the book is filled with easy projects to color and cut out for holidays. Most pages have Bible references too.

Other Dickens: Pickwick to Chuzzlewit
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (December, 1999)
Author: John Bowen
Average review score:

Best of Times, Best of Books
Early Dickens has alays been my favorite, and John Bowen's book is an excellent companion to those wildly energetic first novels. The exciting and thought provoking chapter on Oliver Twist alone is worth the price of the book and will send you back to re-read the novel with a greater appreciation of Dickens' genius.

Oxford Illustrated Dickens (21 Volume Set)

Author: Charles Dickens

Once upon a time...
Once upon a time, I had a terrible cold. I dropped by the library and took out a copy of The Old Curiosity Shop, went home, huddled in my bed for four days, and devoured it. It was the best cold I ever had! Upon returning the book I noticed there was a whole collection of Dickens put out by Oxford...lovely hardcovers with illustrations. Years went by and I saved my pennies and finally bought the entire 21 volume collection. It was the best thing I ever did for myself! Certainly worth every cent, I then continued to devour the rest of Dickens. Oxford puts out fine books, but nothing as wonderful as this collection of Charles Dickens works, which ought to reside in everyone's library. Buy it and you will begin to look forward to those colds!!

Star-Spangled Eden: 19th Century America Through the Eyes of Dickens, Wilde, Frances Trollope, Frank Harris and Other British Travelers
Published in Hardcover by Carroll & Graf (May, 1900)
Author: James C. Simmons
Average review score:

Entertaining and Intriguing American History
I loved Star-Spangled Eden. This well researched history reads like a historical romance. Simmons covers 50 of the most critical years of American History, 1830-1850, through the eyes of eight British men and women who came here, traveled widely, and had marvelous adventures. Each traveler plugs into a major theme of the era when the country developed from raw frontier to a modern industrial state and provides a unique perspective on important events of this period - the Southern slavery system, the Civil War, the exploration and settlement of the West, etc.

My favorite chapter is the last one on Oscar Wilde's witty eleven-month cross-country American tour. To quote the author, "Here was the leading British snob, an effete poseur of highly refined sensibilities, lecturing American audiences from Boston to Leadville on the principles of aesthetics and becoming a popular celebrity in the process. Wilde found himself growing inordinately fond of Americans. A less unlikely love match could scarcely be imagined."

Simmons writes great history-of-travel books. I first discovered him with Castaway in Paradise: The Incredible Adventures of True-Life Robinson Crusoes. I recommend these books to anyone looking for a great read that's based on fact.

Troubled Journey: Coming to Terms With the Mental Illness of a Sibling or Parent
Published in Hardcover by J. P. Tarcher (June, 1997)
Authors: Diane T. Marsh, Rex M. Dickens, and E. Fuller Torrey
Average review score:

Troubled Journey speaks to those with an ill family member
I found this book very interesting. Both my mother and brother are severely mentally ill. This book provided me with some new ideas for coping strategies for myself and my interactions with my ill relatives. Most of all, I liked the quotes in the book.

If you (or someone you know) is struggling with mental illness in their family, I would highly recommend buying this book. I also recommend getting involved with AMI (the Alliance of the Mentally Ill.) They have sibling and child support groups that speak to some of the concerns mentioned in "Troubled Journey."
